What’s the background to Southmead Poultry?

Southmead Poultry in Leatherhead, Surrey now run a popular chicken boarding service

Southmead Poultry is a bespoke family business and small holding based in a semi-rural setting in Leatherhead, Surrey – run by Simon and Tracy.  We sell a variety of fully vaccinated point of lay hybrid chickens, plus chicken coops, poultry accessories and feed. And of course we sell ChickenGuard’s automatic chicken coop door opener.  Plus we run a very popular hen boarding service too.

What made you go into the poultry business  and how did you start out?

We have bred and reared birds for over 30 years, which started off as a hobby, we also entered and won a variety of bird shows over many years. 

Approximately 10 years ago we decided to use our knowledge and create a business which we love and run with a passion – encouraging others to take up the fantastic hobby of keeping chickens.  Chickens make wonderful family pets and companions, they are comical, inquisitive and very sociable, and each has their own individual personality, plus nothing beats the taste of your own home produced egg.  It is fantastic feeling being self-sufficient, knowing where your eggs have come from, and that the hens were kept in good conditions.

What makes you special and standout from other similar businesses

We are very well known for the personalised service that we offer, plus a wide variety of products available in our shop, and we are passionate about spreading the word about the fantastic hobby of keeping chickens.  We also love chatting with seasoned chicken keepers, introducing them to new and better products that come onto the market to make their life easier and healthier for their chickens too.

Southmead Poultry’s traditional wooden Milford Chicken House & Run

We stock different styles of British made traditional wooden chicken housing and chicken coops made from treated timber, as well as easy to clean plastic chicken coops the Eglu Go and from Omlet.   Our shop stocks a wide range of feeders, drinkers and chicken health supplies, accessories and feed you will need.

We now provide a hen boarding service for all those customers who need someone to look after their hens whilst they go on a well earned holiday – their chickens come here for a lovely little holiday all of their own!

What is your best selling product?

Our biggest seller is actually red mite treatments (both liquid and powder), then chicken feed and bedding which is grown/harvested locally.

What is your opinion of ChickenGuard?

ChickenGuard is the greatest invention ever!  It is small and neat, it is simple and easy to use, the instructions are provided both on paper and are available on-line  The company who makes the product is based in this country, the staff are friendly and their customers service is FANTASTIC.  What more could you ask?! 

I use ChickenGuard auto door openers on my own chicken coops – they ensure my chickens are safe and secure – automatically opening and closing the pop hole, and make my life a lot easier (you can use both timer or light sensor, or both – depending on your circumstances).  I think they are a great product, which is why I HIGHLY recommend them to all my customers.
